MNL APARTMENT – BELGIUM
MNL Apartment is a refined interior design project in Belgium that transforms a historic urban apartment into a contemporary living space while respecting the building’s architectural heritage. Lotuz Studio’s approach balances preservation and renewal, creating interiors that feel both of their time and connected to the building’s distinguished past.
The design preserves significant heritage elements — ornate ceiling mouldings, marble fireplaces, and wide-plank timber floors — while introducing contemporary spatial interventions that improve livability. A new open-plan kitchen and living arrangement replaces the original sequence of small, disconnected rooms, creating a generous social space that benefits from light entering from both street and courtyard facades.
The material palette creates a dialogue between old and new: existing marble and plaster are complemented by brushed brass fixtures, matte black joinery, and pale lime-washed walls. Furniture selections mix mid-century Belgian design classics with contemporary pieces, creating layered interiors that feel collected over time rather than decorated in a single gesture.
Lighting design is critical in the Belgian climate where overcast skies are common — a combination of concealed LED systems, statement pendant fixtures, and strategically positioned mirrors ensures warmth and brightness throughout the apartment regardless of the weather outside. The project demonstrates how thoughtful interior design can unlock the potential of historic buildings without erasing their character.
